Netflix Review:Sex/Life

Shahi

If hot and sexy is what you’re looking for but with a plot line more complex than a pizza delivery dude being seduced in the stereotypical tawdry porn film, then maybe you should take a look at Sex/Life;  the  first season, all eight steamy and perplexing episodes, of the Netflix series is now available to subscribers.
Created by Stacy Rukeyser and premised on the semi-autobiographical novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men by BB Easton, the sexy series premiered in June of 2021. The publicity blurbs describe the program as follows: “a suburban mother of two takes a fantasy-charged trip down memory lane that sets her very married present on a collision course with her wild-child past.”
This is an accurate summary, but superficial assessment of Sex/Life. Specifically, the sauna-hot show is graphically, some would sat shockingly, revealing. Not only are acts of sex pointedly displayed (frontal male nudity, for example), issues of sexual satisfaction and dissatisfaction are pondered and explored.
Though the initial episodes of Sex/Life may appear as simply sexually exploitive, with beautiful people engaging in various acts of physical intimacy, as the story develops we are compelled along with the characters to consider philosophical queries such as “Can we have it all in a monogamous relationship?” “Can we happily accept a life of 85% satisfaction?” “Is polygamy a reasonable alternative to monogamy?”
With a daring ensemble of actors — Sarah Shahi as the protagonist Billie; Mike Vogel as Cooper, Billie’s cuckold husband; Adam Demos, the object of Billie’s lust; and Margret Odette as the uninhibited Sasha Snow Billie’s confidant and BFF — Sex/Life is more profound than mere pornography, more believable that the traditional soap opera, and as perplexing as real-life can sometimes be. After all, it is inspired by the novelist BB Easton’s true-life relational dilemma.
* Netflix has not confirmed a second season of Sex/Life, but all of season one’s episode are currently available to Netflix subscribers.
