Theatre Forty hits another home run with a sure-fire dramady set in a senior living facility whose residents have nicknamed their common room “The Algonquin” for reasons that become clear in the play. Written by prolific playwright Paul Stroili, it is as well researched as it is written. And Theatre Forty’s wonderfully deep bench of veteran actors bring their talents to the comedy as well as the pathos, making for an engrossing theatre experience.
Playwright Stroili has developed a winning structure: the warmth and humor of the first act deftly prepares audiences for the complications of the second, juxtaposing employees’ stories with those of the residents as the action unfolds. Tyler (Ethan Rockwell) is a little suspicious of the new-hire Chuck (Michael Mullen), but he still allows him room to get to know everyone, and we gradually learn his secret.
For me, the most touching aspect of “Jukebox” is the warmth of the friendships that we witness growing before us. Newcomer Annie (Mouchette Van Helsdingen) settles into Placid Pines Senior Care Center with the help of the old hands; among them are Peg (Milda Dacys), Josephina (Tricia Cruz), Dennis (Lloyd Pederson and Johnny (Herb Hall). When the groups collectively decides to humor Johnny’s desire for a jukebox for the common room, the group swings into the sort of action that would make any PTA proud.
Director Larry Eisenberg keeps the doors slamming and the common room buzzing, from the first moments that Senior Center head, Mrs. McDarren (Diane Linder), introduces Annie to the others. As always, Artistic Director/Producer David Hunt Stafford works his magic to bring together a phalanx of expert designers. Notably, Michael Mullen designs costumes as well as gracing the stage, while Jeff C Rack (set), Nick Foran (sound), Derrick McDaniel (lighting) work behind the scenes. We have Michele Bernath to thank for the dance moves, too. After all, what good is a jukebox if you can’t dance to it?
A Jukebox for the Algonquin continues Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm, through August 24th, 2025, at Theatre Forty’s Beverly Hills High School location; 241 S. Moreno Dr., Beverly Hills 90212. There is a special talk-back with the playwright scheduled for the August 16th Performance. All tickets are $35.
